Antecedents and outcomes of social relations in later life
by
Noah Webster
Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan
A large and growing literature has documented how social relationships exert powerful influence on a range of health-related behaviors and outcomes across the life course and particularly in later life. Less understood is how social relations are shaped by environmental context (e.g., the built and natural environments) or how resources embedded within social networks influence health. This talk will present recent theoretical and empirical work examining: 1) the role of environmental context in shaping social relations; and 2) how the education level of social network members is related to health and health-related behaviors among older adults.
