Beyond Bronfenbrenner: Expanding the Ecological Systems Model through Lifespan and Biopsychosocial Lenses
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model has played a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of human development. Dr. Chen will expand on that framework by integrating the role of social media as a critical modern context for understanding the lives of ethnic and racial minority youth. She will discuss her ongoing intervention work to maximize the benefits -- and minimize the harm -- of social media use. Finally, she will extend Bronfenbrenner’s model through a biopsychosocial lens, highlighting how early life experiences can “get under the skin” to influence physical health across the lifespan.

Dr. Chen's research has broadly centered on the intersection of stress, race/ethnicity, cultural contexts, and social inequality. She explores how socio-cultural (e.g., ethnic/racial socialization, social support) and bio-behavioral (e.g., sleep, cortisol, allostatic load) factors can be leveraged to promote adolescent development in the face of inequality.
