Join us for an exciting talk by the philosopher, Jennifer Nagel (Toronto)!
Abstract: In recent years, researchers have discovered a class of simple, non-verbal puzzles that only humans seem to be able to solve, and not until roughly the age of four. These puzzles involve modal reasoning, but it is somewhat mysterious both why this is so hard for younger children and other animals, and how it is that we ever become capable of it. In this talk, I argue that consciousness of possibilities emerges from the interactive character of human learning, and then explore some surprising philosophical consequences of this way of understanding the roots of our rationality.
