Join us at the Planetarium for our latest Sciences & Humanities Under the Dome Lecture!

This presentation examines social issues in Detroit neighborhoods and approaches each with functional to structural solutions for community well-being from the liberal arts and sciences. Once needs are identified, student and course projects can work with residents and neighborhoods to garner and galvanize resources to alleviate issues. Dean Hartwell will use the examples of Auntie Na's Village and Core City's Love campus to discuss the creation of vibrant community cores and corridors in collaboration with WSU students, faculty and staff.

About Steffi Hartwell

Steffi Hartwell is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University, professor of sociology and adjunct professor of psychiatry. Before joining Wayne State University, she spent two decades as a sociology professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Her research has included a focus on higher education pipelines for people following release from corrections, interventions for communities with trauma histories and community engagement after gun violence. As an undergraduate, Dean Hartwell studied both sociology and art history, which is reflected in her engagement in and around Detroit, including her service on the Board of Directors of the Heidelberg Project.
