Keith Haring: Subway Drawings
Dates: April 17 through Aug. 15
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17, 5 to 8 p.m.
Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts is pleased to present UNDERGROUND, an exhibition of works by Keith Haring at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery.
The exhibition explores roughly 30 iconic subways drawings Haring created in New York City between 1980-85. The works offers a glimpse of his graphic style and the development of Haring's own visual language through patterns, symbols and semiotics that became iconic and recognizable, due to its repetitious nature.
The chalk on black paper (used to cover unused advertising panels in the New York City subway) was temporary and performative. The drawings were created to provide enjoyment and the chance to see art in a public setting. Haring was inspired by public engagement, proclaiming that “art is for everyone" and should be used to provoke viewers to use their imagination.
