The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education invites child welfare workers, family preservation workers, foster care workers and adoption services to attend one of our specialized child welfare trainings. We are excited to host Meghan Peake BBA, CPRC, DP-ADC, and Brooke Rodriguez, LMSW for the training titled, “Providing Support to Families Struggling with Addiction.”

Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect nearly 80% of families involved in the child welfare system, often creating complex dynamics that impact safety, attachment, and overall family well-being (Moreland et. al, 2021). This presentation provides an in-depth exploration of how SUDs influence family systems and child development through the lens of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented practice.

Grounded in ecological, attachment, and family systems theories, participants will learn to recognize the signs and behavioral indicators of SUDs, understand how trauma and co-occurring disorders shape family functioning, and apply compassionate, strengths-based engagement strategies. Emphasis will be placed on stigma reduction, culturally responsive care, and reflective self-assessment to enhance professional effectiveness and promote equity in service delivery.

Through interactive discussion and applied learning, attendees will leave equipped with practical tools to foster resilience, trust, and healing in families navigating substance use and recovery.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Attendees can obtain 3 social work CECH’s upon completion of the training, payment receipt and passing of the post-training quiz. A CECH certificate will be available for download upon completion of the aforementioned items.

COST: Free to all MDHHS workers and MDHHS contracted private agencies; $30 all others.

All attendees must RSVP for this training. Attendees will receive the Zoom link via email upon completion of the RSVP and payment.
