Gothic Practice Symposium
This two-day hybrid symposium will bring together scholars and students from Europe, Canada, and the U.S. to showcase creative-critical work tackling the question of what the Gothic, approached not just as an aesthetic or a style but as a methodology, might look like. The Gothic, as a literary genre, is very much focused on revealing hidden secrets, overcoming tyranny, and facing one's fears: at this symposium, we will ask how we might employ these sorts of tropes in our own creative and/or academic work. What would it look like to work gothically?
This event grows out of a forthcoming special issue of the journal Gothic Studies on "Gothic Practice" and includes presentations from some of the contributors to that issue. It will also feature creative work and academic presentations by Wayne State University students, as well as workshops and creative activities. At the symposium, we hope to create a collaborative space where presenters and attendees can develop a “Gothic Practice.”
