Physicians' Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) is a medical order that provides guidance on life-sustaining treatments, such as CPR, intubation, and artificial nutrition and hydration, in the event that a patient is unable to communicate their wishes. POLST education is essential to ensure patients understand their options and can make informed decisions about their care at the end of life. Effective education involves clear communication, patient-centered care, and empowerment of patients and their surrogates to make decisions that align with their values and goals, promoting better quality of life and reduced suffering at the end of life.
