Session Overview

Is there a difference between privacy and confidentiality? Have you unknowingly violated someone's HIPPA rights? In this session, participants will explore critical concepts to providing quality care. These concepts include privacy and confidentiality which are legal and ethical terms in social work practice. Participants will also learn more about specific provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) relevant to working in healthcare settings

 

Presenters:

Dr. Glinda Rawls is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University (WMU). She has been a faculty member since 2007. Dr. Rawls earned a doctorate in counselor education and supervision from WMU in 2008 and has a master of education degree in college student affairs leadership from Grand Valley State University and a masters of arts in student affairs in higher education (now known as college counseling) from WMU. She has been a licensed professional counselor and licensed school counselor in the State of Michigan since 2007. In addition, Dr. Rawls is a nationally certified counselor (NCC) and approved clinical supervisor (ACS). Also, Dr. Rawls was a Fellow of the 2022-23 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Academic Leadership Development Program (ADLP). The program provides an opportunity for WMU faculty to gain valuable knowledge and experience in academic leadership by working closely with select administrators from other colleges and universities in the MAC. Prior to joining the WMU faculty, Dr. Rawls has almost ten years of clinical experience providing individual, group, and career counseling services to college students at two public universities in Michigan. Dr. Rawls has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses at WMU since 2009. Dr. Rawls is an active member in several professional counseling organizations. Her research interests are in school and career counseling, college student development and college counseling, and multicultural counseling and diversity.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1) understand that quality care includes protecting patient privacy and confidentiality

2) discuss provisions in the Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) that are relevant to social work practice in healthcare settings

3) apply concepts learned in the course to case studies and real life scenarios

Cost:

Attendees can obtain 2 social work CECH’s upon completion of the training, payment receipt and passing of the post-training quiz. A CECH certificate will be available for download upon completion of the aforementioned items.
