Join the Detroit Writing Project co-directors for a hands-on exploration of two engaging writing activities that help students connect their writing to the people, places, and experiences that shape their lives. Participants will explore asset mapping and place-based writing inspired by Detroit neighborhoods and murals. While designed with secondary English language arts classrooms in mind, these activities can be adapted for educators across PreK-12 grade levels and content areas.

You’ll leave with:

  • Two classroom-ready writing activities
  • Strategies for helping students draw on their lived experiences, assets, and strengths as writers
  • Ideas for using community spaces, public art, and local stories as writing inspiration

This Educators Night workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Mary Neville, assistant professor of English education, Wayne State University College of Education, and Ms. Janikka Winfree, 9-12 curriculum leader, Detroit Public Schools Community District.
