The Sociopolitical Context of Latino Aging in the US: Patterns, Determinants, and Projections
by
Courtney Boen
Associate Professor of Sociology, Brown University
The sociopolitical climate experienced by Latinos in the US has undergone substantial transformation over the past three decades, with important implications for population health and aging. In this talk, I first draw on a variety of data to document and describe diverse patterns of Latino health and aging in the US, highlighting heterogeneity by race and legal status. Then, linking a variety of policy, administrative, and health data, I interrogate the sociopolitical factors underlying those patterns, paying particular attention to the roles of immigrant policies, immigration enforcement, and diverging legal, political, and regulatory environments in shaping health and aging outcomes. Altogether, this research underscores the importance of intersectional analyses of Latino health and aging while also highlighting the particularly pernicious role of restrictive and exclusionary policies in shaping current and future Latino health and aging patterns in the US.
