Inclusion of LGBTQIA+ Populations in Alzheimer's Disease & Aging Research

by
Jason Flatt
Director, Center for Health Disparities Research, Associate Professor of Social and Behavioral Health, University of Nevada Las Vegas

Over 3 million adults aged 60+ in the U.S. identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or another LGBTQIA+ identity. Despite this, LGBTQIA+ populations remain underrepresented in Alzheimer’s disease and aging research, limiting our understanding of their unique risks, experiences, and needs. In this talk, we will examine opportunities and challenges for advancing the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ populations in Alzheimer’s disease and aging research. Drawing on lessons learned from our national research studies with LGBTQIA+ older adults, we will discuss strategies for community engagement, recruitment, and retention; the importance of collecting sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data; and key considerations for building trust and conducting inclusive research. We will conclude by highlighting research gaps and future directions for ensuring LGBTQIA+ populations are meaningfully represented in Alzheimer’s disease and aging research.

Join us on campus at WSU’s Freer House, one block north of the Detroit Institute of Arts, or register in advance to attend on Zoom.
