Alumni Travel Program: Iceland's Magical Northern Lights Discovery
All Day
Experience Iceland with fellow alumni through the Wayne State University Alumni Association Travel Program. This guided international trip explores Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, rich culture and the natural wonder of the northern lights during peak viewing season.
The journey begins in Reykjavík, Iceland’s vibrant capital, with time to explore historic sites and enjoy local cuisine. Travelers then follow the iconic Golden Circle, visiting Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. Along the south coast, highlights include black sand beaches, waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers and the breathtaking Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, where icebergs float through icy blue waters.
Several evenings are dedicated to searching for the aurora borealis, including a northern lights cruise and nighttime outings in rural Iceland, offering multiple opportunities to witness this unforgettable natural phenomenon. While sightings are weather dependent and not guaranteed, Iceland’s long winter nights provide excellent conditions.
The itinerary also includes a visit to a lava exhibition center, time near glaciers and a relaxing soak in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon before returning to Reykjavík.
This alumni travel experience is best suited for active travelers comfortable with walking on uneven terrain and spending time outdoors in winter conditions. Alumni, friends and family are welcome to participate.
