Pull up a stool, grab a drink and learn something new.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just the stuff of science fiction movies. It is also a phenomenon far beyond smartphone apps and driverless vehicles. AI is considered to be the most transformative scientific development in human history.

But do people really understand what AI is? Beyond the scientific significance, what ethical, cultural, religious, economic, political and philosophical implications exist with AI?

Join Saeed Khan, senior lecturer of near eastern, Asian and global studies at Wayne State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as he gives an overview of the critical issues to consider about AI as the world sits on the threshold of the next big scientific breakthrough. Join us starting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at HopCat Detroit's Huma Room. The presentation begins at 6 p.m.

Khan, who is also a research fellow at WSU’s Center for the Study of Citizenship, is a frequent commentator on WDET, a panelist on CBC’s Turning Point, and a contributor to several national and international media outlets. He is also a consultant for the Vatican’s Cor Unum Dicastery and the U.S., United Kingdom, European Union and Indian governments.

Knowledge on Tap consists of live — and lively — discussions with some of Detroit’s greatest minds. The events are held every other month and feature an informal presentation by one of Wayne State’s renowned faculty members on a topic of their choice, followed by dynamic conversation. All Knowledge on Tap events are free, open to the public and require no educational background. All ages are welcome.
