Join us for the next next Health Care Sciences Research Workshop: 3D Printing in Health Care with Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Joseph Roche.

Please reach out to Roche at joseph.roche@wayne.edu in advance to discuss potential applications of 3D printing in your specific area of clinical practice, instruction and scholarship, so that he may use them as case studies during the workshop.

Learning Objectives

In TinkerCad, learn how to:

  1. Create a basic design (e.g., a cube) according to desired measurements
  2. Carve/hollow out parts of the design to create chambers, holes for screws, sockets, etc.
  3. Align different parts of a build
  4. Fuse different parts of a build into one single structure
  5. Avoid issues, such as "overhangs", where the printer has to print on an unstable base

Once design is created in TinkerCad, learn how to:

  1. Export build as an STL file
  2. Open STL file with Ultimaker Cura free software (called slicing software)
  3. Slice design with Cura to generate GCODE file
  4. Transfer GCODE file onto microSD card
  5. Print file with 3D printer from microSD card
  6. Assess print and troubleshoot as needed for improvement
Suggested learning tools and prerequisites for the workshop:
  1. Please bring a laptop or similar electronic device on which 3D printing software can run
  2. Please create a Tinkercad account (https://www.tinkercad.com/) account for hands on learning
  3. Please download and install the latest free slicing software (CURA) from the Ultimaker Cura website (https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/).  If asked for a printer type, please select FLSUN SR (super racer), and choose the defaults.
  4. As noted above, please reach out to Roche (joseph.roche@wayne.edu) to discuss your specific 3D printing interests/needs so that they can be used as case studies (exemplars) in the workshop.
