Join the WSU Alumni Association and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College for the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series taking place on Wednesday, September 18th at 5:30pm. A reception with a light fare and refreshments will follow the program. This year's program will explore the influence that art has on climate justice and how residents can contribute to this meaningful cause.  Xavier Cortada will lead the discussion on Creativity, Courage, and Justice: Championing Innovative Climate Solutions Through Art.

In this engaging and thought-provoking talk, Xavier Cortada will explore the evolution of his social practice, tracing his journey from a passionate student leader involved in volunteerism to an artist and activist dedicated to social and environmental justice over the last 30 years. Cortada will share pivotal moments from his early career, including his efforts in community service, leadership roles, and advocacy for marginalized groups.

These experiences have shaped Cortada's intersectional approach to addressing climate issues, particularly the disproportionate impact on historically underserved populations. He will challenge the audience to recognize their power to effectuate change, urging them to identify and leverage solutions within their communities through collaborations with local organizations and stakeholders. By fostering empathy and a sense of purpose, Cortada believes that individuals can become informed, compassionate members of society who are empowered to tackle the pressing issues of our time.

After the program, Xavier Cortada will be joined on stage by Dean Hasan Elahi, College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts, and Associate Dean Elena Past, Irvin D. Reid Honors College, for a Q&A session.

Parking: Guests attending the lecture on campus are recommended to park in Parking Structure #5 and enter through the visitor's entrance. On-street parking may also be available. 

About the series: The Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series began in 1992 and was named in honor of the civil rights leader and former WSU administrator upon his retirement. The series features distinguished corporate and civic leaders who speak on a wide range of important issues, from politics and business to law and the arts. 

Until his death in 2011, Dr. Johnson dedicated his life to uplifting his fellow man and the greater community. He was widely respected both locally and nationally for his work as an educator and civil rights leader. His decades of work and countless contributions to society have left a lasting legacy, celebrated by this impactful lecture series.
