Do not miss Opening Night for the Social Work Disability Justice Coalition! 

After months of organizing and development, the Wayne State School of Social Work is proud to debut our newest student organization: The Social Work Disability Justice Coalition (SWDJC). Come celebrate our organizational launch by joining the Coalition on Thursday, February 23rd for our “Social Work Disability Justice Movie Night”.  

The Disability Justice Movie Night will feature a hyflex showing of the 2019 film ‘The Upside’. Starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, ‘The Upside’ tells the story of a former billionaire (Cranston) who now uses a wheelchair and how his relationship with his caregiver (Hart) gives them both a new lease on life. Through humor and reflective storytelling, ‘The Upside’ explores the ups and downs of living with a disability and emphasizes the importance of lived experiences. Please note that ‘The Upside’ is rated PG-13 for depicting “suggestive content and drug use”. 

The Disability Justice Movie Night is indeed a hyflex event, with both limited in-person attendance at the School of Social Work and an unlimited Zoom option. Attendees can choose to participate in either format – we just ask that you indicate as such in the RSVP form. In person slots will be first come, first serve. Heavy refreshments will be provided throughout the in-person showing. Email updates will also be provided.  

Following the movie showing there will also be a brief reflection led by Coalition student leaders. Here, attendees will have the opportunity to tease out key themes and adapt them to their own social work practice. A more robust follow-up conversation will likely be announced afterwards.  

The Social Work Disability Justice Coalition is dedicated to raising awareness about accessibility issues across Wayne State, metro Detroit, and the social work profession. By joining together in action, we can make the world an accessible environment for all.
