High Energy Batteries: Addressing the Challenges of Durability and Reliability

Abstract:

 As energy storage becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives the need to understand durability, reliability and safety becomes more important. High energy Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles, consumer electronics and grid support are starting to push the boundary limits for what is theoretically achievable from this chemistry. This talk will discuss lessons learned during the development process and how these lessons can be applied to new chemistries such as high energy Li metal and new arenas such as fast charging for electric vehicles which exceeds 200 kW. A specific emphasis will be placed on how analysis can significantly improve the transition from early stage discovery to advancement to a near commercial state.

Bio:

 Dr. Eric J. Dufek is the Energy Storage Group Lead in the Energy Storage and Advanced Vehicles Department (at.inl.gov) at Idaho National Laboratory. His current research interests lie in understanding fundamental issues which limit performance of energy storage systems for both vehicle and stationary applications. Of particular interest is the impact that aggressive use cases have on performance and how high energy chemistries can be more effectively harnessed.
