Luke Popiel, General Motors

Abstract

The conversation will provide students with unique career possibilities and skill sets that students should develop to be competitive in the marketplace. I will provide things that I have done as a student that enabled me to make the next step. Lastly, I will touch on my perspective of remote work and its advantages/disadvantages.

Biography

Luke Popiel is currently an Intellectual Property Manager at General Motors. In this role, Luke leads the management of IP in the areas of Infotainment & Telematics, Data Analytics & Business Methods, and Information Technology. This includes invention submission, patent maintenance and reporting processes. He has also been involved with providing competitive intelligence reports based on published patents and applications that are used to assess GM’s position relative to the competition or for potential acquisition of a company.

Since joining General Motors in 2013, Luke has supported global GM network infrastructure as a Network Engineer. During that time, he was able to be certified as a Cisco Certified Network Association. Thereafter, he has held several test engineering positions within OnStar where he developed understanding how data is collected from the vehicle. While attending Wayne State, he worked as a Co-op student for the National Security Agency.

Luke holds a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State University (2013) and Juris Doctor Degree from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (2021). He is currently an MBA Candidate at University of Indiana Kelley School of Business.
