Angela Trepanier, M.S., C.G.C. - "The Role of Faculty Mindset in Supporting Student Learning"
Dr. Trepanier will discuss how having a fixed versus growth mindset can negatively impact student learning and speak on strategies for demonstrating a growth mindset in a classroom or clinic setting.
At the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the psychological concept of mindset and its impact on student achievement.
- Recognize how faculty mindset (fixed or growth oriented) can serve as a situational cue that influences a student’s mindset (i.e., thoughts, motivations, and performance).
- Identify faculty messages that may indicate a fixed versus growth mindset.
Angela Trepanier, MS, CGC is a certified genetic counselor, professor (clinician educator track) in the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, and director of the Wayne State Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. Her research and professional interests include career advancement among genetic counselors, genetic counseling outcomes, improving integration of genomics into primary care, and utilization of alternative service delivery models to improve genetic counseling access. She is a public member of the Michigan State Board of Medicine, a section editor for the Journal of Genetic Counseling, and a past president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and the Association of Genetic Counseling Program Directors.
