Culturally Competent Care for African American Population in Healthcare Settings Part 2
Event Description:
The Wayne State University School of Social Work Continuing Education Office invites healthcare professionals to an insightful workshop focused on enhancing culturally competent care for African American populations. This workshop will explore both historical and contemporary challenges affecting healthcare access and shaping the experiences of African American individuals and communities. Attendees will gain practical, culturally responsive strategies to promote equity, build trust, and improve health outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Deepen understanding and application of culturally competent care for African American populations.
- Examine historical and present-day barriers to healthcare access and their impact on patient experiences.
- Identify culturally responsive strategies that foster equity, trust, and improved health outcomes.
Featured Speaker:
Dr. Nnodim Opara, a double-board certified physician and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM), will lead this session. Dr. Opara is the Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program and the founding director of the Health Equity and Justice in Medicine curriculum—an initiative addressing social and structural determinants of health through education, advocacy, and community engagement. She also co-directs the Global Urban Health & Equity (GLUE) curriculum and provides clinical care to underserved populations while mentoring residents and medical students in wellness, academic development, and health equity.
A dedicated advocate for health equity and global health, Dr. Opara co-founded Africans in Medicine, an organization uniting African medical professionals to improve health outcomes in the African Diaspora. Her leadership and commitment to culturally humble, patient-centered care have earned her multiple accolades, including the Most Engaged Physician and Faculty of the Year awards. Outside of her professional achievements, Dr. Opara is a proud wife and mother of three daughters, with a passion for music, dance, theater, and writing.
Continuing Education Credits:
- Participants can earn 1.5 social work CECH credits upon completing the training, payment, quiz, and evaluation.
- A downloadable CECH certificate will be available upon fulfilling all requirements.
- Full attendance is required to receive credit.
Cost:
- 1.5 CECH credits are available for licensed social workers at $15.
