The Wayne State University Alumni Association and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College in collaboration with the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts invite you to join us for the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series featuring Dr. Kathleen Hall Jamieson for Health, Science and Politics: Truth and Trust in a Divided Landscape.

This year's lecture will explore the intersection of health, science and politics, the media's influence on political discourse and public trust, and how people consume, evaluate and make sense of information in an increasingly divided media landscape. Drawing on decades of research in political communication, misinformation, and democracy, Dr. Jamieson will provide valuable insight into how today's information environment influences civic engagement and public understanding. Dr. Jamieson will be joined by former WDET News Director Jerome Vaughn, who will lead the moderated discussion and Q&A session.

The event will conclude with a reception of beverages and light fare.

About the speaker:

Dr. Kathleen Hall Jamieson is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication and Director Emerita of the Annenberg Public Policy Center. An internationally recognized scholar of political communication, misinformation, and democracy, she is the author or co-author of 18 books, including the award-winning Cyberwar: How Russian Hackers and Trolls Helped Elect a President (Oxford Press, 2018), and is the co-founder of FactCheck.org. A member of the National Academy of Sciences and recipient of its Public Welfare Medal, Dr. Jamieson is widely recognized for her leadership in advancing evidence-based public discourse and science communication.

About the series:

The Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series began in 1992 and was named in honor of the civil rights leader and former WSU administrator upon his retirement. The series features distinguished corporate and civic leaders who speak on a wide range of important issues, from politics and business to law and the arts. 

Until his death in 2011, Dr. Johnson dedicated his life to uplifting his fellow man and the greater community. He was widely respected both locally and nationally for his work as an educator and civil rights leader. His decades of work and countless contributions to society have left a lasting legacy, celebrated by this impactful lecture series.
