OVPR Town Hall: Core Enabling Technology Advancements @ WSU

Significant advancements have occurred in the University Research Cores that bring improvements in the operations and provide new technologies in our cores that support the evolving needs of the Wayne State research community.  Below are some of these changes that will be discussed at an upcoming Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) Town Hall on Tuesday, April 5th from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. This town hall will allow open discussion on these topics between OVPR, core directors and the research community.

Genome Sciences Core (GSC) Location and Leadership

The Genome Sciences Core has relocated from the Mott Building to the third floor of the Integrative Biosciences Center.  The new location includes a pre-amplification laboratory used for sample receipt, DNA isolation, RNA isolation, PCR set-up as well as post-amplification laboratories for next-generation sequencing and single-cell studies. An additional sequencing room will house the MiSeq and NovaSeq 6000.

In addition, we are happy to announce that Dr. Katherine Gurdziel has been appointed director of the GSC.  Dr. Gurdziel received her Ph.D. in bioinformatics at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor and started a joint postdoctoral scholar/administration position in the GSC in 2016.  Katherine is actively developing programs to bring new users into the Genome Sciences Core.

Proteomics Core Instrumentation

The Proteomics Core has added an Orbitrap Eclipse Mass Spectrometer.  The Orbi Eclipse provides the highest sensitivity for proteome analysis.  Multiplexing capabilities enable unparalleled quantitation accuracy with minimal missing values.

Microscopy, Imaging and Cytometry Core (MICR) Instrumentation

The MICR core recently obtained a new Leica DMi8 inverted epifluorescence microscope to assist in histological and fluorescent imaging. Complete with a Leica DFC 7000t 2.8 MPixel CCD camera, it is capable of 1920 x 1440 pixel resolution with exposure time from 4 ms - 200 seconds and bit depth of either 8 or 12 bit. This microscope produces excellent real-time images of tissue sections, cells in culture, or fixed cells on a slide. The color camera can image both histologically stained samples as well as fluorescently stained samples and provides a budget-friendly option for basic morphological imaging.

In addition, the MICR core recently acquired a new Cytek Northern Lights cytometer. This state-of-the-art analytical cytometer supports high-parameter panels through full-spectrum (spectral) flow cytometry. The Northern Lights can detect 24+ colors, with scatter detectors for the violet (VSSC) and blue lasers (FSC and BSSC). Autofluorescence unmixing/extraction can improve marker resolution. The instrument is also equipped with a 96-well plate auto-sampler for high-throughput sample acquisition.

Lumigen Center Instrumentation

The Lumigen Center NMR and EPR Laboratory recently installed a new Bruker Avance NEO 500 NMR spectrometer with an iProbe probe and sample changer. The iProbe provides high sensitivity for the major nuclei, combined with short 90º pulse widths to achieve even irradiation over a wide frequency range. This instrument can be used to monitor reactions, characterize molecules, and quantify molecules.

The Lumigen Center Electron Microscopy Laboratory unveiled a Talos G2 200X with 3D Tomography. This instrument offers direct imaging of the atomic scale features in materials that are responsible for the material’s behavior. This instrument will advance research in the areas of energy conversion/storage, catalysis, microelectronics/sensing, medicine, and metallurgy.

The Lumigen Center X-Ray Diffraction Laboratory welcomed a Bruker D8 Venture used for chemical crystallography. This single-crystal x-ray diffractometer is used for determining 3D structure from single crystals. With dual micro-focus sources (Cu and Mo), the D8 Venture can collect on a variety of samples, such as solid-state inorganics, organometallics, organics, metal-organic frameworks, proteins, and peptides.

The Lumigen Center Mass Spectrometry Laboratory welcomed a new quantitative high resolution mass spectrometer, an Obritrap Exploris 120 with a Vanquish Flex Binary UHPLC. This instrument is used to provide accurate mass for synthetic compounds, natural products, and pharmaceuticals.


Please join us for the OVPR Cores ZOOM Town Hall to discuss these advancements in CORE Enabling Technologies on April 5th. This town hall will focus on new instrumentation and operation changes in the cores that will enhance the research efforts at the university. Directors of cores with new instrumentation/operation changes will present their new resources in detail. Researchers will then have the opportunity to discuss their research needs with the individual core directors in breakout rooms.
