DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Daniel Frohardt\, Professor\, Wayne State University D
epartment of Mathematics\nTitle: \;Mathematics and the Calendar \;
\nAbstract: Irregularities in the calendar\, such as leap years and months
of differing lengths\, complicate making plans for\, say\, next month. Th
ese irregularities clearly invite mathematical analysis. In the first part
of the talk\, I will discuss a mechanism based on easy mental arithmetic\
, which helps cope with these irregularities. The procedure can easily be
adapted to work out the day of the week for any date in this century\, or
in other centuries\, for that matter. \;\n \;\nIn the latter part
of the talk\, I will talk about the deeper mathematics lying behind some l
ess frequently noticed anomalies related to the calendar. These include th
e differences between the lengths of the four seasons as well as the fact
that the earliest sunrise does not occur on the longest day of the year.\n
