Please join Wayne State University's Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES) for their upcoming seminar on April 11, 2024 at 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. ET. The seminar will be offered in-person at the Integrative Biosciences Center (IBio) in the main seminar room located at 6135 Woodward, Detroit,  and virtually. The seminar is free to attend; registration is required. The Zoom link will be emailed to all registrants wishing to attend virtually prior to the seminar.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Patrick Ryan, professor of pediatrics and environmental and public health sciences at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. Dr. Ryan will present, "Air Pollution, Community Characteristics and Children's Health."

Abstract

Air pollution is a ubiquitous environmental exposure associated with multiple adverse health outcomes in children and adults. This seminar will provide an overview of multiple research projects focused on: 1) the assessment of air pollution exposure using models, personal sampling, and low-cost sensors, 2) the impacts of air pollution on respiratory and neurobehavioral outcomes in children, and 3) community characteristics and social determinants of health that modify the effects of air pollution on children’s health. 

Biography

Dr. Ryan is professor of Pediatrics and Environmental and Public Health Sciences at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine.  He obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from Xavier University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Epidemiology from the University of Cincinnati, Department of Environmental Health. In 2013 he joined the faculty of Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center and currently serves as the associate director for research in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, director of the Graduate Program in Clinical and Translational Research, and director of the Translational Workforce Development Core for the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training.

Dr. Ryan’s research integrates exposure science with epidemiology to study the impact of environmental exposures and social determinants of health, including air pollution, community resources, greenspace, and others, on respiratory and neurodevelopmental health outcomes in both children and adults. In addition, his research includes the use of personal air monitors and health sensors in epidemiologic studies and the impact of naturally occurring elongated mineral fibers on pulmonary disease in the western U.S.
