There is a significant body of research on racism and ethnic racial socialization, which is how youth are provided information about ethnic-racial group membership such as potential experiences, values, and traditions, among youth and families of color. However, this research rarely investigates the influence of intersecting identities, skin color, and contexts on racist experiences and the ethnic racial socialization processes. In this talk, Dr. Scott will present The Phenomenological Ethnic-Racial Socialization Conceptual Model (Scott et al., 2021), which incorporates youths' and families' meaning making of skin color and youths' intersecting identities within contexts. She also will discuss the application of the model's concepts in community-based participatory research focused on youth and families of color.
