In the second Continuing Orientation session of the Winter 2024 semester, five Wayne Law faculty will discuss their work in and research on how the systemic inequalities created and perpetuated by racially-discriminatory structures in Detroit have shaped the city in which we study, live, and work today. Professor Rebecca Robichaud will moderate a panel including Professors Peter Hammer, John Mogk, Tonya Phillips, and Maya Watson, building on the chapter of Detroit’s history about which 1Ls read in Arc of Justice. All continuing orientation sessions are a required component for 1Ls, aiming to further develop the foundational knowledge initiated during the first orientation sessions. This session will introduce students to the roles law and lawyers have played and can play in both building and dismantling systems of inequality, focusing on both the legacies of and possible disruptions to structural racism in Detroit.
