ASAP/5 brings almost 200 speakers to Detroit to explore the persistent, yet complex interrelations and interactions between art, artists, and the city. More specifically, it challenges participants to interrogate the common association of contemporary urban space with destruction, dispersal, and decay, and, simultaneously, of metropolitanism with innovation, creativity, and the visionary production of possible futures. How do the various arts form, and transform cities in their national and transnational permutations? And how do cities, in their turn, produce, create, and change traditional and emergent art practices and theories?
