Professor Donald Haurin of Ohio State University will present "Older Americans: Debts, Assets, and Prospects".

The number of Americans age 65 and greater will increase dramatically for at least the next 30 years. This discussion highlights some of the economic and social consequences of this change. Multiple factors affect the economic well-being of seniors including their income, assets, and debts. While their asset levels are substantial, a large proportion is held in the form of illiquid home equity. Their debts have risen substantially over the last 30 years, both in amount and as a proportion of income. The discussion considers the means by which seniors can tap their assets to supplement their retirement income, and the projected impacts on the larger economy.
