Abstract: The presentation reviews the main autonomous vehicles architectures. The focus is on the applications of AI to the algorithms for decision making for path planning. Included is an overview of the methods for developing AI inspired driving policies. Some practical facets of application of AI methods to designing driving policy for autonomous vehicles are discussed. The relationship between the reinforcement learning based solutions and the use of rule-based and model-based techniques for improving their explainability, robustness and safety are reviewed. The presentation concludes with the lessons learned, on-going research and future trends in integrating AI technologies within the design of autonomous vehicles.
Biography: Dr. Dimitar Filev is Henry Ford Technical Fellow in Control and AI with Ford Research & Advanced Engineering and a member of the Ford Corporate Technical Advisory Council. He had technical leadership positions in research, development and deployment of advanced projects in manufacturing, safety, powertrain control and autonomous driving. He is conducting research in computational intelligence, AI and intelligent control, and their applications to autonomous driving, vehicle systems, and automotive engineering. He holds 120 granted US patents, has published over 200 research publications and has been awarded with the IEEE 2008 Norbert Wiener Award and the IEEE 2015 Computational Intelligence Pioneer’s Award. He served as President of the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society in 2016-2017. Dimitar is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
