Are you interested in a career that focuses on reducing the consequences of the criminal/legal system?

Please join us to learn about an exciting new academic opportunity - Holistic Defense! In this partnership between the Wayne State’s Law School and School of Social Work, students earn academic credit for performing fieldwork at one of our placement sites, practicing holistic defense. Holistic defense attempts to address the many factors that can drive a person into the criminal justice system, and mitigate the impacts a person can suffer as a result of such contact, including the loss of a job, a home, the custody of children, or even the ability to remain in this country. In addition to their fieldwork, law and social work students take a joint seminar class, learning to collaborate across disciplines. Through this externship, law students earn credit toward their experiential learning graduation requirement.  Social work students earn credit towards their field clock hours.

Holistic Defense will be offered during the Fall 2022 term, with applications opening in late February 2022.  Further details will be shared during the information session.

Professor Daniel Ellman, the Law School’s Director of Externships, Assistant Professor Athena Kheibari, the School of Social Work’s Holistic Defense Program Coordinator, will lead the discussion. Dean Sheryl Kubiak of the School of Social Work will also be joining.
