Brewing Chemistry - The Chemistry of Concrete: Durability & Sustainability with Leah Kristufek, PhD in civil engineering studying concrete deterioration, BASc Chemical Engineering, MASc Mechanical Engineering
Many of our structures are made out of concrete. It seems like a simple recipe; just some cement powder, water, salt and rocks but the final product isn’t an unchanging monolith! Concrete chemistry is a whole area of research made all the more important because of the high CO2 emissions from manufacturing cement. A big focus right now is on using all possible tools to improve durability so structures last longer and require less maintenance. This presentation will touch on the biggest threats to structures in our northern climate including the use of road salts, loss of pH in concrete and reactions in aggregates.
