This event is in the past.
Please join the Department of Anthropology and the friends and colleagues of Gordon L. Grosscup to celebrate his life and career.
Where: Traffic Jam & Snug Restaurant, 511 W. Canfield Street, Detroit MI 48201
When: 3-6pm, Friday May 6, 2022
Dr. Gordon L. Grosscup passed away on November 9, 2021 at the age of 94, following an extensive career in Archaeology. In 1964 he moved to Detroit to teach at Wayne State University. He quickly immersed himself in Department life and in his Detroit community. Over decades he trained students on archaeological excavations throughout Detroit and the tri-county area, and in the Wayne State University Museum of Anthropology, now named in his honor. Living near campus, Gordy regularly hosted neighbors, students and colleagues in his yard and home for drinks, New Year's parties and other celebrations. He also frequented his neighborhood restaurant, the Traffic Jam & Snug, where he could regularly be found dining with friends.
Please join us at the Traffic Jam & Snug to share stories and memories of Gordy Grosscup together with others who cared for him and learned from him.
Friends will gather beginning at 3pm, with some formal remarks at 3:30pm, followed by the opportunity for attendees who wish to share their thoughts publicly to do so. While some faculty will need to leave early for a graduation ceremony at 5pm, all are welcome to stay and celebrate Gordy until 6pm.
If you are unable to attend, but wish to share a written memory at the event, or record a video memory, please reach out to museum staff at email@example.com . Photos are also welcome.
