Since 2020, the response to the global pandemic has changed how we teach and how we interact with students and each other. We now understand that we are not going to return to “normal” as we knew it in 2019.  This C&I Day "Welcoming and Inclusive Classrooms: Strategies and Support for Teaching" will pick up on the fall semester C&I Day on using restorative practices in the classroom by focusing on best practices in instruction.  Our student body is exceptionally diverse and adds to a rich environment for learning.  This rich environment also poses challenges at times, and we do not always have the humility and understanding of what we need to do.  Our challenges include microaggressions, addressing absenteeism and requests for extensions, grading fairly and giving feedback, helping students work in groups, and helping students when they are “triggered” by curriculum content or classroom interactions that are a part of professional preparation. This program will focus on addressing classroom challenges, particularly around antiracism and best practices that may help improve our students’ and our experiences in the classroom.  We hope to combine our own experiences with those of our colleagues to leave feeling restored or renewed about what we do as teachers and to have access to tools or skills to use in the classroom to address some of the most common issues that arise in teaching. 

Attendees will be able to:

1. Describe antiracist and inclusive teaching practices
2. Strategize ways to incorporate antiracist and inclusive practices into teaching strategies
3. Access resources that will assist in addressing challenges in the classroom
