The WSU Humanities Center invites faculty, students, staff, and the community to a Brown Bag talk given by Bruce Russell (Professor, Philosophy) on the topic of "Truth and Rationality".

Abstract: 

Some people think that truth is socially constructed, or at least that some truths are. I will argue that truth is never socially constructed. Whether a proposition is true or false does not change over time or culture. It was always true that the earth revolved about the sun, though at one time it was rational to believe that the sun revolved about the earth. It was always true that slavery and genocide were wrong, though perhaps at some time it was rational to believe otherwise. Some propositions do not have a truth value. It may be neither true nor false that a bunch of beans is a heap. Whether some proposition is true or false or neither does not change though whether people believe, or rationally believe, that it is true or that it is false can change.
