ABSTRACT
Adolescence is a time of social exploration in which individuals form ties with new same aged peers. Importantly, this process occurs in a broader social context —individuals are simultaneously forming and updating mental representations of one another as part of an overall network with its own unique structure. In this talk I will present on fMRI data from a cohort of first year high school students to show how individual differences in social network position influence whether individuals construct idiosyncratic or redundant mental representations of their classmates. Implications for theory and translation will be discussed.
