Paintings by John Hunter: Homecoming
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The exhibition "Homecoming" celebrates the artist John Hunter’s return to Detroit and Wayne State University. This marks his inaugural exhibition at the university, commemorating his comeback to both the city and the institution that significantly influenced his artistic journey. During the 1960s and 1970s, Hunter began his artistic development under the mentorship of Robert Wilbert and John Egner at Wayne State University, ultimately earning a master’s degree in 1972. He continued his academic pursuits by obtaining a master’s degree and a doctorate in Art History from the University of Michigan.
“Homecoming” is an exhibition that reaffirms Hunter’s artistic legacy while highlighting his connections between art, education, and community. These captivating paintings intricately explore the artist’s identity as an African American gay man through a complex cultural lens focused on race and identity. For the past two decades, Hunter has portrayed his immediate family, but here expands his definition of “familia” to include lovers and friends who have profoundly influenced his life.
