TITLE: The functional equation of Riemann’s zeta function

ABSTRACT: The modular forms seminar begins with the proof of the analytic continuation and functional equation of the Riemann zeta function to the entire complex plane. The key idea is to express the zeta function as the Mellin transform of a modular form. Every aspect of this proof has subsequently been generalized, inspiring key parts of the Langlands program. In particular, we will mention a generalization to the Dedekind zeta function of a number field.
