Title: NonsolvableMonodromy groups for low genus coverings of the Riemann sphere

Abstract: Suppose X and Y are Riemann Surfaces and f:X-->Y is generically n to 1 with branch points B, then pi_1(Y-B) acts on the generic fiber. The monodromy group of f is the image of pi_1(Y-B) in Sym_n. I will discuss aspects of the project, inspired by a 1989 paper of Guralnick and Thompson, of determining the permutation groups that arise as monodromy groups for coverings of the riemann sphere by a surface of low genus. Working with Bob Guralnick, Corenliu Hoffman, and the late Kay Magaard, I have concentrated on the case of non-solvable monodrony groups that do not contain the alternating group of degree n.
