Title: Student Response to a Self-Paced Linear Algebra Course
Abstract: As part of my outreach activities, I have been teaching middle school and high-school kids (and teachers) computer programming and 3D modeling since 2010. To scale up the effort, I have developed self-paced gamified online courses where students learn at their own pace with the help of tutorials, videos and examples, and "beat challenges" as they progress through levels. Based on the long-term positive experience with this type of instruction, during 2019 I have created a self-paced online Linear Algebra course which works in the same way. Instead of listening to an instructor, students learn on their own. The instructor does not serve as the delivery vehicle for the course material, which allows him/her to spend time more effectively by helping the students who actually need help. In this talk I will describe how the self-paced course works, the real-time student progress data which is available to the instructor, as well as the anonymous student response. I will also show a comparison of exam scores from the previous semesters and the new self-paced course. Finally I will mention some lessons learned, and what improvements I plan to implement for the next semester.
