Building Youth Capacity to Address Environmental Health and Justice in Metro Detroit

Presenter: Natalie Sampson, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor of Public Health, University of Michigan-Dearborn; Environment Section Chair, American Public Health Association

Dr. Natalie Sampson will discuss the Environmental Health Research-to-Action (EHRA) summer academy that supports youth in developing skills in science, advocacy, and communication related to local environmental justice issues. In Metro Detroit, threats to environmental health are constant, and intergenerational community mobilization remains necessary to reduce their adverse effects. Grounded in the principles of community-based participatory research and using high-impact active learning strategies, for five years the EHRA Academy has shown to be an effective model for building community capacity with youth.
