Please join the Center for Gender and Sexuality for our next session of Behind the Publication, a behind-the-scenes workshop series on faculty research in gender and sexuality.

The series continues with Dr. Kidada E. Williams, Professor of History. Dr. Williams delves into the lives of African American victims and survivors of racist violence. Her work, I Saw Death Coming, was Longlisted for the 2023 National Book Award for Nonfiction and won the 2024 Organization of American Historians’ Civil War and Reconstruction Book Award. She is also the author of They Left Great Marks on Me, a co-editor of #CharlestonSyllabus, a groundbreaking initiative, and the host and co-producer of “Seizing Freedom,” a podcast docudrama that brings to life the epic story of African Americans’ fight for freedom during the Civil War Era. Her contributions have earned her a place in the Society of American Historians, and she currently serves as a Professor of History. This talk is entitled “Sitting with Atrocity Survivors’ Stories.”

After Dr. Williams's talk, we will raffle off copies of her book, I Saw Death Coming.

About the series: The central goal of this series is to offer graduate and undergraduate students a series of informal workshops where faculty encourage and demystify research by sharing their own experiences. We invite WSU faculty members to share a little about the genesis of their current or recent research. We ask them to discuss the joys and frustrations of the project; to elaborate on the decisions around the scope of the work; to assess methodological questions; to discuss writing practices; to highlight the importance of colleagues, librarians, friends, and other interlocutors more generally for their work; and to offer tips and strategies to help students through their own projects.
