The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to host the NIH/NSF-focused workshop: Planning & Writing Successful Grant Proposals – A Virtual Seminar in Two Parts, presented by Dr. John Robertson of Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops.
This webinar will be presented over 2 days: the first half on the morning of Tuesday, November 10th; the second half the morning of Wednesday, November 11th. We hope this novel presentation schedule enables more researchers to participate!
It is important to attend both halves of the webinar, but special provision has been made for those whose schedules conflict with parts of the webinar. If you miss a segment of the presentation, please communicate that to email@example.com … she will work with those persons to make up the material so no one misses any content.
This workshop is ONLY open to WSU faculty and current postdoctoral and graduate trainees. NOMINATION AND REGISTRATION ARE REQUIRED.
Since the OVPR is covering the costs for the seminar, registrants must be nominated by a university official:
- Department chair for faculty member
- Faculty researcher for postdoctoral fellows
- Graduate advisor for graduate students

Content of the Webinars
Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops was founded by academicians for academicians to help researchers obtain formal training in how to support their work with grant proposal writing.
This widely acclaimed seminar comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the grant proposal-writing process. Emphasis is given to such things as idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.
Participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic, which leads reviewers through their applications. It is stressed that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers, who have read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or nothing, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel. Strategies, tools, and tips designed to merit a fundable priority score are emphasized.
Picking-up the Supporting Material
All participants will receive an extensive handout, as well as one copy of The Grant Application Writer's Workbook: either the NSF-based version or the NIH-based version. You’ll be asked to select the book you wish at registration.
Due to COVID-19 and the necessity of offering seminars via on-line instruction, the textbook and handout must be picked up by the registrant. We will identify the location for pick-up as we approach the date of the event.
Dr. John Robertson holds a Doctorate in Pharmacology/Toxicology and has been an Associate Member at Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops since 2010. In 2017 he became the Managing Member. He has been the recipient of competitive extramural funding from both the NIH and non-federal sources. He has authored 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters. In addition, he has been a member of grant review panels, a reviewer for a number of biomedical journals, and served on editorial boards. He has also been routinely recognized for excellence in teaching.
