The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to host the workshop Workshop for Funding Proposals in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences on Friday, March 12th, 2021, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
This workshop is ONLY open to WSU faculty and current postdoctoral & graduate trainees.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and SPACE IS LIMITED.
This Webinar will be highly interactive – Draft Proposals Solicited from Registrants
Led by Dr. Arthur F. Marotti, Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at Wayne State University, draft proposals submitted by YOU, the participant, will be reviewed and discussed. This is a valuable real-time feedback tool to improve your proposal before it is submitted for external funding. Dr. Marotti also generously offers his continued proposal-preparation guidance to attendees of the workshop.
What is Needed from YOU for a Successful Workshop
Since the workshop will be dedicated to discussing participant draft proposals and scrutinizing examples of successfully funded proposals, participants must submit draft proposals. Here are 3 steps you can take to help make this workshop a success:
- Identify a funding opportunity that would be a good fit for your project.
- Option: Wayne State faculty and trainees are welcome to use the funding search platform, PIVOT***, free of charge. The Pivot database contains external funding opportunities from many federal, state, and private sources for all disciplines and types of projects. You can sign up for PIVOT using your WSU email or AccessID by clicking here and begin searching now!
- Option: Utilize additional support services for identifying and interpreting external funding opportunities and preparing proposals, such as Julie Burtch or Gayle Foley in Foundation Relations, Research Services in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or Julie Osburn in the College of Education.
- Option: You can also go directly to websites of key sponsors for your discipline, such as the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, U.S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation’s Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE) Division, and American Library Association.
2. Prepare your draft according to the guidelines provided by the sponsor. These are the primary proposal sections to draft and submit:
- Research Plan/Work Plan/Methodology
3. Send your draft proposal, sponsor guidelines, and your cv to email@example.com not later than March 4th.
You will receive a week in advance of the workshop: a copy of the draft proposals received from participants and a copy of select successfully funded proposals. Review these proposals and come prepared to actively and thoughtfully scrutinize and share comments on each others’ proposals.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT FOR THIS WORKSHOP:
Draft proposals are essential for this workshop. In addition to live discussion among the webinar participants, Dr. Marotti will provide you with his critique and observations and continue to provide support for your proposal throughout its development up until submission.

Arthur F. Marotti is a Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at Wayne State University. Dr. Marotti is the recipient of research fellowships from The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (1975-76), The American Council of Learned Societies (1988-89), and The National Endowment for the Humanities (2000 and 2005-6). In addition, he has been co-Principal Investigator on two federal grants (2002-7, 2007-10) from the Department of Education to fund bilateral exchanges of students and faculty with Brazilian universities.
