The Academia del Pueblo seeks to establish mutually beneficial connections between the academy, engaged citizens and urban communities.
What can or should democracy look like in the Americas of the 21st century? This year our theme explores the challenges and possibilities of democracy in relation to Latina/o/x and Latin American peoples. Students will examine the complex contours of democracy from multiple perspectives including, intersection with gender identities, health care, educational and migration policies, the global climate crisis, notions of citizenship and enfranchisement, freedom of expression and popular culture.
Keynote speaker: Dr. Delia Fernández, Assistant Professor of History, Michigan State University
