This event is in the past.

**Date:**September 27, 2022

**Time:**1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

**Category:**Seminar

**Speaker:**Ualbai Umirbaev, PhD, Department of Mathematics, Wayne State University

**Title:**An effective criterion for Nielsen–Schreier varieties

**Abstract:**The classical Nielsen-Schreier Theorem states that every subgroup of a free group is free.

A variety of universal algebras is called Nielsen-Schreier if an analogue of this result holds.

It is well known that the variety of Lie algebras is Nielsen-Schreier.

I will talk about an attempt to describe varieties of Nielsen-Schreier algebras using the Grobner bases for operads.

This is joint work with V. Dotsenko.
