The WSU Humanities Center invites faculty, students, staff, and the community to a Brown Bag talk given by Kurt Troutman (ASO III, Education) on the topic of the "Cultural Humility: The Hunt for an Evaluation Framework".
Abstract: Cultural Humility (CH) continues to be a popular idea. It cycles in and out of the professional lexicon across industries like Healthcare, Clinical Mental Health, and Academic Affairs. CH takes the prior concept of cultural competence and raises the bar through constant self-reflection and improvement. CH is not a new idea, but why does it continue to show up then leave without being truly implemented? During my research and a practicum experience with Henry Ford Health Systems, I discovered one challenge to the staying power of CH was the lack of an appropriate evaluation framework. The iterative nature of CH makes it difficult to deploy in a top-down model with static evaluation frameworks. Every time I see CH raised at a conference or in an essay/paper I am reminded of this gap. I want to stop enabling the cyclical behavior of such a worthy idea, and gain insight on evaluation frameworks which could support a full implementation of CH in a professional environment.
