Colloquium: Partnering with Parents to Buffer Intergenerational Trauma
Meeting ID: 948 8236 0409
Passcode: 820661
Speaker: Kandace Thomas, MPP, PhD, Executive Director, First 8 Memphis
In general, parents and caregivers intentionally employ strategies to prevent the same trauma they experienced as children from happening to their young children. However, the more retrospective trauma parents experience, the more likely their young children experience trauma.
Dr. Thomas' talk will introduce the concept of Conscious Buffering: caregivers intentionally working to avoid exposing what they experienced or saw in the past to their children. She will also share deep wisdom and awareness from African American and Latinx parents protecting their children.
Dr. Thomas' talk will remind us of the prevalence of trauma and intergenerational trauma among African American and Latinx families with young children by sharing results of a study that broke new ground as one of the first to describe the prevalence of intergenerational trauma across generations. The importance of learning from the families we work with will be emphasized, and practical suggestions for collaborating with parents to promote healing and safety will be shared.
