Title: Arithmetic statistics for knots and knot invariants
Abstract: Certain knot invariants related to the Alexander polynomial and the Seifert matrix can be viewed as arithmetic objects. We investigate the question of how many different possible values can these invariants take for knots whose Alexander polynomial has bounded size? We will see that this is really a number theory question, though it has applications to families of high-dimensional knots. We present conjectured asymptotics and proven bounds for case of knots of genus 1, and will discuss what we expect for knots of higher genus.events@wayne.edu (Web Master)Tue, 22 Oct 2019 15:00:00 EDThttps://events.wayne.edu/mathematics/2019/10/22/mathematics-algebra-seminar-alison-miller-83917/Faculty/Administration11403:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.Mathematics Algebra Seminar - Alison MillerMathematics Colloquium - Professor Christopher E. Title: Solution of Time-Dependent Multiphysics Coupled Problems with Adaptive hp-FEM and hp-DG Methods
Abstract: When using advanced computational methods such as hp-FEM and hp-DG for multiphysics coupled problems, the design of mathematical methods and the design of the software platform for their implementation are tightly connected both ways. In particular, good software design makes it possible to develop better mathematical methods. We will present several novel techniques for higher-order adaptive FEM and DG methods and show how they can be combined elegantly in an object-oriented software design. This software architecture was created in the framework of a NEUP project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Using this approach, we will show how to combine various physical fields and equations in multiphysics PDE systems, use different meshes to approximate specific behavior of each field, split the spatial and temporal discretization to eliminate interference between spatial discretizations and time integration methods, and to combine hp-FEM and hp-DG in a monolithic way for problems where only some of the quantities need to be discretized via DG. We will also show the importance of controlled-accuracy time integration based on adaptive implicit higher-order time-integration methods.

Title: The motivic kq-resolution
Abstract: (joint work with Dominic Culver) Let kq denote the very effective cover of Hermitian K-theory. The kq-based motivic Adams spectral sequence, or kq-resolution, is a motivic analog of Mahowald’s bo-resolution. We applied the kq-resolution in the C-motivic setting to calculate the eta-periodic stable stems (recovering results of Andrews, Guillou, Isaksen, and Miller) and v_1-periodic stable stems. I will summarize these calculations and discuss work in progress towards analogous results over general base fields and in the C_2-equivariant setting. In addition to large-scale calculations of periodic phenomena, the kq-resolution can be used to calculate low-dimensional 2-complete Milnor-Witt stems. I will present some calculations in the C- and R-motivic settings (recovering results of Dugger-Isaksen), then discuss work in progress towards analogous results over general base fields and the 2-complete version of calculations of Röndigs-Spitzweck-Østvær. events@wayne.edu (Web Master)Tue, 12 Nov 2019 15:00:00 EDThttps://events.wayne.edu/mathematics/2019/11/12/mathematics-topology-seminar-j-d-quigley-82876/Faculty/Administration11402:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.Mathematics Topology Seminar - J.D.
