As the call to end racial inequity rang loud across the nation and world this summer, the School organized a series of community discussions that highlighted the rich history of activism in social work and the Metro Detroit community. The response to those events was robust and positive. We are continuing and expanding on these conversations with a four-part series focused on diversity, equity and inclusion.

The first in this four-part series, "Stepping Up for Social Justice Activism: How you can create change", is an online forum highlighting the experience of local advocates working to advance social justice. Panelists will provide tangible takeaways for the attendees, describing ways in which they can be involved in advancing social change in their community during today's turbulent times.

Panelists include Teddy Dorsette III, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and Tawana Petty. This panel and community discussion will be moderated by Shae Howell.

ZOOM: This virtual event will be held on Zoom. Space is limited and we are currently at capacity for this event. If you would like to be placed on a waiting list to be notified if a spot opens up, please email Betsy Vanderstelt at

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: We are offering 2 free Social Work Continuing Education Credits (CEU's) to attendees. Those seeking to obtain the CEU's must log into the event by the 4 pm start and attend the full event. They must also pass a short post-event quiz after the event and the CEU certificate will be emailed within 7-10 business days. For questions regarding CEU's contact or 313-577-9348.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE TRACKING: Social Work students needing to verify their attendance for extra credit (per their instructor) must also attend the full event and pass the post-event quiz as well. Verification will then be sent to your instructor. Instructors who would like attendance of their students tracked should send their class roster(s) via Excel to Betsy Vanderstelt at by October 20, 2020.

The link for the post-event quiz will be provided at the event conclusion.
